If I want to make changes to my garage or shed, do I need a permit?

This can depend on a few different circumstances. If the garage or shed was not appropriately permitted when it was constructed, a permit will need to be approved for the entire structure. Changes being made to garages and sheds over 120 square feet will need to bring the garage or shed up to code, if it is not currently.

If your garage or shed is already permitted, a building permit/Minor Development Permit for the changes may be needed. Contact the City Development department at (303) 538-7295 to find out if you will need a permit.

  • Structures under 120 square feet do not require a permit.
  • Structures between 120 square feet and 481 square feet require a building permit.
  • Structure between 481 square feet and 767 square feet require a building permit and a Minor Development Permit.
  • Structures over 767 square feet require a building permit and a Development Permit.
  • Structures over 120 sq. must meet setbacks required for the specific property.

Visit the Building Inspections page (for building permits) or visit the Development Applications page for more information.
