What are the requirements for becoming a Thornton firefighter?

Persons interested in becoming a City of Thornton firefighter must submit an online job application during the posting period to be considered.

  • To be notified when a position becomes available, visit: www.thorntonco.gov/jobs, click on Job Alerts. When the job is posted externally within the next 12-month period, a notification email will be sent and you will then be able to apply online. 
  • Requirements for the position of firefighter include a High School diploma or GED and a valid drivers license with a safe driving record. A current Candidate Physical Ability Test certification (CPAT), EMT Basic or higher medical provider certification, might be required. See current job posting for details. at www.thorntonco.gov/jobs;
  • Successful completion of the requirements for Colorado State Firefighter I or higher certification within one year of entry-on-duty; 
  • City of Thornton conducts additional testing such as oral board examinations, and other selection and background processes for potential new fire recruits.
