Do I need a pressure check and how do I order one?

Water pressure and volume are terms that are often confused.

  • Water pressure allows the water to flow through the city water system, through your meter and into your home. This pressure is maintained within the system by pump stations and water storage tanks located throughout the Thornton service area.
  • Volume is a term used to define the amount of water that comes out of the faucets in your home, usually calculated in gallons per minute. Pressure and volume may vary in different parts of the city; however, the State of Colorado requires a minimum of 35 pounds per square inch of water pressure. The pressure provided to Thornton residents should be adequate for most domestic needs, but, you will experience a drop in pressure if several water devices are being used at the same time, such as sprinklers, a shower, and a washing machine.

If you experience a sudden drop or fluctuation in your water pressure, city of Thornton personnel will check the volume and pressure at your water meter from an outside faucet of your home within 24 to 48 hours of a request.

To schedule a pressure check, please contact Utilities Operations by placing a Service Request or calling 720-977-6500.
