Does the city of Thornton have any water use restrictions?

Category: Water Conservation

Living in Colorado's semi-arid climate means you've probably experienced water restrictions. Voluntary and mandatory water restrictions are sometimes enacted during drought cycles to help manage water demand. By conserving water year-round and using it wisely, we can help sustain our water supply, reduce the risk of mandatory restrictions, and enjoy more water fun throughout the year. If you're a Thornton resident, you'll be notified if there's any change in the restriction level. Still, it's easier to conserve regularly. View Thornton’s Current Drought Status.

Thornton City Council adopted permanent Water Use Rules into the City Code. The following turf/lawn irrigation rules will be enforced from April 1 to October 31:
Water no more than 3 days/week.

  • No lawn irrigation between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

  • These rules do not apply to vegetable gardens or other types of gardens.

  • Exceptions will be made for large properties that cannot irrigate appropriately within the restricted schedule or for the establishment of new seed or sod.

  • If you water daily or between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., please adjust your watering schedule.

  • Thornton's summer watering guide is available at www.thorntonwater.com/saving-outdoors/.
