Where can I find general sales and use tax rates?

The total combined sales tax rate in Thornton is 8.5%. This rate is broken down as follows: State of Colorado Base Sales Tax 2.9%, City of Thornton Sales Tax 3.75%, RTD Tax 1%, Adams County Sales Tax .75%, and Cultural Facilities District .1%.

The City of Thornton is a Home Rule City and collects its 3.75% sales tax. The remaining 4.75% tax should be reported directly to the Colorado Department of Revenue. To contact the Colorado Department of Revenue, please call 303-238-7378. The City of Thornton also collects a separate Hotel/Motel Lodging Tax of 7.0% on all room rentals of 30 days or less.  Marijuana city tax is 8.75%.

Generally all City taxes are due on the 20th day of the month following the previous month's business. If a due date falls on a weekend or holiday, the due date will be moved to the next working day. Sales tax is collected on most items purchased in the City, including food, movie tickets, short-term rentals and video games.
