What are the laws for vehicles and recreational vehicles?
All vehicles, trailers, motor homes, recreational vehicles and motorcycles must be in operating condition and must display current license plates. If a vehicle is not licensed or operable, then it must be kept in an enclosed structure, such as a garage, or be removed from the property.
Properly licensed vehicles that are operating may be parked on private property if they are parked on concrete, asphalt, or rock that is at least three-fourths inch in diameter.
Recreational vehicles, motor homes and trailers cannot be parked on the street unless actively being loaded or unloaded, or with a three-day permit issued by the City Development Department.
There are additional regulations regarding abandoned or unsafe vehicles, as well as for commercial vehicles, semi-trucks and trailers, and construction equipment.
Vehicles that do not meet all of the City Code requirements may be towed (impounded) after proper notice.
To request a code officer inspect a vehicle at a location, submit a My Thornton request and provide as much information as possible.
